First Direction: Early life theme – 17.3 & 21.5
The emphasis on learning about this theme is strongest earlier in life. The intention is for me to master this theme by around age 40. If I don’t, it will continue coming up. Since I’m a Time Bender, timing is more variable for me. If this is an area where I’ve skipped steps, I’ll likely find myself having to repeat lessons involving this theme to gain wisdom I might have skipped over. It will also be important to resist any temptation to fall back on what I’ve learned here rather than pushing forward into new learning and growth.
More Apparent: 17.3
Less Apparent: 21.5
The learning modality I’ll experience will be through Line 5, the Visionary Leader, which involves universalizing the theme. Others will project their experience of this theme onto me and see me as either a savior or demon when it comes to resources and sustainability, depending on their own views. Mastery through this modality means finding the people who see my value in this area rather projecting fear and lack mentality.
A bit of insight from the I Ching (linked to Gate name above) that might give a clue about navigating the change from novice expression to wisdom – I’ll know if/when it becomes useful:
Line 5 – It is likely that what will be exposed is a funky inner attitude that, like a rotten apple, is affecting every other apple in the barrel. Your ability to act with clarity has been impeded by postponing what you already know needs to be done. Correcting this inner attitude restores balance and harmony.
Additional Subtle Influences
Hidden Gift (21.3, more apparent) – This aspect shows where I have hidden gifts that I’ve been led to believe are a curse, so I’ve tried to keep a lid on them. It shows ways I might have controlled myself to meet the expectations of my family/community and the world. It’s also the area in my natural curiosity will lead me to explore in search of a deeper truth. This is especially true with the line 3.
I Ching guidance for this influence, Line 3 – Sometimes we can see very clearly what needs to be done, but either we don’t have the authority to make it happen or can’t get the support we need from others to follow through. But there is an inner dimension to every situation, and there is a value in making an attempt to do what’s needed, even against all odds. Don’t hesitate to go it alone if your own awareness and clarity are telling you something must be done. The inner strength you will gain from this is just as important as changing the outer circumstances.
Bliss (21.4, more apparent) – This aspect is an influence to seek escapism and avoidance to deal with challenge rather than facing and overcoming it. The challenges of this gate (learning to let go, release control, self-regulation, and self-discipline) will all trigger the urge toward escapism instead. Using alcohol or other addictive behavior is a particular risk in this area. The purpose of the Bliss aspect is to teach me to not settle for less than I deserve.
The wisdom to be gained is valuing the true bliss derived from spiritual connection, which is experienced in activities and relationships that feed my soul, rather than the temporary but empty euphoria induced by escapism. In this Gate, that wisdom will give me ability to self-regulate in ways that are nourishing instead of depleting, which supports my sustainability. Line 4 means that escapism will undermine my stability, whereas confronting and overcoming challenges for this Gate will reinforce my stability.
I Ching guidance for this influence, Line 4 – Sometimes taking responsibility for putting things right, especially in very difficult circumstances, can feel so overwhelming that all we want to do is pull the covers up and pray the whole thing will go away. But when we succumb to fear or panic we can lose sight of what’s real and what is imaginary. Turn your attention instead to understanding the nature of any obstacles or antagonism to what you propose to do, remain clear about where you’re going, and be determined to get there.
Transformation (21.5, more apparent) – This aspect creates the influence of destruction in order to tear down what’s weak/misaligned so that which is strong and aligned can be built. Transformation will counter the Escape influence; if I pursue escapism for too long, I’ll subconsciously employ the influence of Transformation to create a situation in which I have no choice but to confront and correct whatever I’ve been avoiding, especially with respect to this Gate.
I Ching guidance for this influence, Line 5 – It is likely that what will be exposed is a funky inner attitude that, like a rotten apple, is affecting every other apple in the barrel. Your ability to act with clarity has been impeded by postponing what you already know needs to be done. Correcting this inner attitude restores balance and harmony.
Determination (21.5, more/less apparent) – This aspect influences me toward dedicated focus to succeed. It highlights this Gate as an area where I’m likely to stand alone and measure my worth against others and may perceive myself as judged by others. In novice expression, this influence will reinforce my urge to meet my needs by trying to control others and life in general. This influence brings a powerful potential for lashing out at others when I feel pushed out, condemned, or ostracized.
Honesty is needed here, as is compassion and acceptance. With wisdom, I can harness the positive effects of this influence. Instead of feeding my determined energy into revenge, I can direct it inward and achieve impressive self-regulation skills, thus giving me true control over what I experience in life.

Channel of Sustainable Resources
Gate 21 is part of the Channel of Sustainable Resources. Since I don’t have the other Gate for this channel (45) active in my circuitry, I’ll be electromagnetically drawn toward people who do, and I’ll live out the theme of this Gate in those relationships. People who have a hanging Gate 45 will be equally drawn to me and the relationship will be a learning experience for this channel for both of us. (If I’m in relationship with someone who has the full channel active, I’ll be just as drawn toward them but that electromagnetic factor won’t be reciprocated, and it will be more of a learning experience for me than for them.)
Since this channel forms a connection from the Will to the Throat, I’ll feel inspired to express my value and needs in those relationships, as will the other person – whether or not we act on that inspiration will depend on how much we’ve matured in expressing those Gates. With novice expression, I’m more likely to be controlling in those relationships and there may be a power struggle regarding sustainability, enoughness, and material, energetic, and/or emotional resources.
Relationships that bring activation to this channel for me will also create the effects of activation in my Will Center. It’s not true activation because it’ll only occur as part of our energetic interaction; the less I’m around the person, the less I’ll feel the sense of activation. The active Will works like a bank, storing every kind of resource. The receptive Will, on the other hand, receives and amplifies signals from others. Since I have the Will Gate for the Channel (controlling resources), there’s a risk that I will continuously store resources received from the relationship and then exhaust them outside the relationship. Since this isn’t an equitable or sustainable situation, it’s likely to create conflict with the other person.
This is because Gate 45 is the Gate of Distribution (sharing resources). The person who has the Gate 45 will willingly share their resources with me, but if I distribute them all outside the relationship, the person in the Gate 45 will ultimately come to a state of depletion. Both of us have the potential for martyrdom, obliterating the Self for the sake of others, and ultimately creating an agenda of depletion, which is not sustainable. With maturity and wisdom, the sharing that happens with this Channel is equitable, sustainable, and peaceful. Another name for this Channel is the Money Line; with wise expression, it has the potential to bring a great deal of abundance to the relationship.
Other positive characteristics that the relationship can bring out in me include teaching ability, natural leadership ability, and generosity.
Additionally, if I have a relationship with someone who has the Gate 45 active and spend a lot of time with them, I’ll have a more stable sense of self-worth, values, and willpower. When I leave their company to engage with different people/groups, my experience of those things will become variable and inconsistent again. Spending more time in the former situation will provide a stable environment for developing a healthy sense of self-worth; however, the variability I experience when I leave their company can create a lot of doubt and confusion about whether my value is genuine.
I may feel and behave very differently when I’m not with the person. This can lead to a continuation of doubt and confusion when I’m with the person again, along with guilt or shame. The apparent contradictions can cause the relationship to make me question my self-worth rather than supporting it.
This is an example of how awareness regarding what I’m experiencing and why has the potential to dispel self-harming beliefs I’ve had about myself, replacing them with the empowering truth and transforming my perception of my past, present, and future.
The novice expression of this channel is hoarding, lack mentality, holding back, overusing, hiding, stealing resources for personal gain, and/or martyrdom. When I form a complete channel through relationship, the lessons for me to learn are to cultivate “enoughness” in a sustainable way, to be aligned with authentic value, and to establish sustainable, enduring ways to share resources with others.
Wisdom and optimal expression of this channel is sustainability through endurance and planning, as well as equitably, peacefully, and sustainably sharing resources for the betterment of others. This theme is also important to growth in the Line 4 of my profile since sharing sustainably contributes positively to strong foundations and interpersonal stability.
Non-activating Channel Influences (my Gate 45)
Acceptance (45.4, less apparent) – In novice expression, this influence in my channel will show up as negative self-fulfilling prophecies, ego battles, and experiences that tear me down/apart. This can mean refusal to take accountability, putting all blame on others in a situation, or the opposite of extreme of taking all blame and martyring myself. With maturity, I’ll gain the wisdom to break out of negative, self-destructive patterns.
The key is acceptance of my flaws/weaknesses and taking reasonable accountability for my mistakes through commitment to learning and moving forward. I’ll also expect the same from others I’m involved with. When I release the belief that mistakes require me to hold onto guilt, shame, and self-recrimination, I’ll no longer feel the need to blame others, avoid responsibility, or hold onto resentment.
I Ching guidance for this influence, Line 4 – A live social interaction is a dynamic quality born out of each individual’s contribution. You might feel as though your life is on hold as you tend to the needs of the community or group, but this is only temporary. Once you have contributed your unique talents to laying the foundations for the success of this particular gathering, a balance will be restored in your own individual affairs as well.
