Tapping
My old, negative stories keep me imprisoned in a detrimental perspective of myself and my history. Tapping is a simple, evidence-based Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) used to clear out negative beliefs about myself and integrate a new, affirming narrative. One of the benefits of this technique is that it’s effective even when I can’t identify events that caused the stories. Through tapping, I can clear harmful self-beliefs without a lengthy plunge into past events that I’d rather not relive or don’t remember.
Yes, a solution this simple really is effective. Just because the human mind thinks every solution has to be complicated, difficult, and grueling doesn’t make it true. The truth is, there are only two possible outcomes if I try tapping: it works and things change for the better or it doesn’t work and nothing changes. There’s no bad outcome. That means the only reason to not try it is I don’t feel ready for the changes I say I want. Maybe I’m attached to this negative self-destructive identity. It’s painful, but it’s familiar. I don’t know who I’ll be without it. If that’s the case, I can start by tapping on “Courage.”
Biological benefits are the biggest reason to try tapping; it’s been proven to beneficially alter expression of 72 genes with a variety of functions, including cancerous tumor suppression, UV radiation protection, decreasing insulin resistance, increasing synaptic connectivity, immune response (viral and opportunistic infection), red and white blood cell production, metabolism regulation, increasing neural plasticity, cell membrane strengthening, and oxidative stress reduction. There’s a great deal of information available regarding the science of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) if I want to explore it further.

Although I CAN do reflection, journaling, further exploration into anything that comes up, etc. after tapping, that’s not at all necessary to gain the benefits. If I do tapping before going to sleep, I’m less likely to have difficult emotions affecting my day. I follow tapping with listening to the sound file for additional benefit, or fall asleep listening to the sound file. I’ll also likely process what needs clearing while I sleep, whether or not I remember it.
Noticing how I feel before tapping, after tapping, and then when I wake up will help me gauge if tapping is helping me, whether I’m processing during sleep, etc. I can also try it other times of the day and compare effects. Whatever works best for me is the right way to do it.
